Principal Bio

Josh Roy, PE | Founder & Principal, Roy Engineering

Josh grew up around real estate development and spent several years working in construction before ever setting foot in an engineering classroom. By the time he earned his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, he already understood how buildings come together from the ground up, the kind of knowledge that changes how you approach a set of drawings.

That background is what shapes how he practices. He doesn't design from the outside looking in. He understands what it takes to build what's on the drawings, which means he's thinking about constructability, cost, and sequencing from the first sketch, not as an afterthought during value engineering.

After 10+ years working across national practices and regional consultancies, on everything from tenant improvements and restaurant renovations to $150M infrastructure facilities, Josh built experience across steel and concrete systems, industrial process structures, coastal high-wind and high-seismic design, adaptive reuse, seismic retrofit, and long-span systems across virtually every delivery method. He founded Roy Engineering with a clear point of view about what good structural engineering actually looks like. One of his professors put it simply: "Strength is essential, but otherwise unimportant." It's a reminder that over-designing for strength doesn't make a structure better — it makes it more expensive. The real work is meeting every design constraint, not just the most obvious one.

Roy Engineering exists because clients deserve better than the alternative. Every client gets direct, consistent access to a senior licensed engineer — not at kickoff, not just at milestones, but throughout design and construction, including when things get complicated in the field.

Why Clients Work With Us

Most clients who reach out to Roy Engineering aren't shopping for a structural engineer. They're looking for a different experience than the one they've already had.

What clients tell us about their experience before working with us:

  • Their engineer was technically capable but not communicative

  • Design decisions were made without considering the impact on other disciplines

  • RFIs required multiple follow-ups, took days or weeks, and still left too much to interpret

  • The relationship felt transactional

  • The design kept getting value-engineered because it wasn't efficiently designed to begin with

These aren't complaints about competence. They're complaints about structure, and about an industry habit of designing to the conservative edge rather than collaborating toward the best outcome for the project.

Roy Engineering is built around a different model: one principal, fully engaged, on every project. We work directly with architects, contractors, and owners to deliver structure that's safe, buildable, and cost-conscious from the first drawing to the last RFI.

Structural decisions made early have the greatest impact on cost, schedule, and buildability. The best time to get us involved is before the design is locked.
